Daddy was off from work as was Mommy. Connor and Dad carved the pumpkin (a wolf's head this year).

We had a great time getting all dressed up. Connor was himself...and awesome football player. Missy Kay Kay was a "butterfly". (Her costume was for a fairy, but she thought it was a butterfly, so a butterfly she was). Her costume even came with a matching outfit for her Barbie. Let me footnote that with a need for the dress manufacturers to include bloomers for the Barbie outfit. EEK!

We stopped by Grandma's house. She had a wonderful gift bag for each of us loaded with toys and candy. She had selected a Disney Princess Trick or Treat bucket for Mikayla which was an instant hit. Thanks, Mom! You still got it! :)

Our church was having a Fall Festival with hotdogs, cotton candy, booths, a bounce house, dunking tank, and super slide. The kids had a blast! Sorry, brother Kyle about both Spencer and Connor dunking you repeatedly during your time in the dunk tank. It was fun, safe, and no stress. Mikayla absolutely loved the Disney Princesses bounce house and the giant slide. Connor was a wonderful big brother and patiently took sissy on the slide. Thanks, Connor! She was laughing and squirming so much that the slide pictures are blurry, but the joy is unmistakeable!

Donuts with Daddy

Each fall at Mikayla's preschool, the teachers host Donuts with Daddy. This is a morning where Daddy and daughter spend a little time seeing what Mikayla gets to do at preschool. And, of course, there are donuts.

This morning was Daddy's date with his little princess. After donuts, they made a craft together. They made a lily pad with everyone at home listed. Daddy said no wonder he was so tired all the time. After looking at the lily pad, there were nine frogs on the pad: Mommy, Daddy, Kay Kay, Spencer, Connor, Beezer, Smuckers, Cooter, and (last but not least) Grandma.

Birthday Celebrations and Disney

As is our tradition, we trekked down to Disney to celebrate birthdays. Just a couple of years ago, we always went down to celebrate Spencer's birthday, but now, we celebrate Spencer and Mikayla's birthday. And we are thrilled to have it that way.

We enjoyed the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. We also enjoyed the Disney Marketplace and dinner at the ESPN Club on the Boardwalk.

I can hardly believe that Mikayla is 3 already....and Spencer is 16! He was just a little peanut when he was born. Now he has turned into a very handsome, kind young man. I can hardly believe how quickly the time has flown.

Mommy & Kay Kay had an all girl morning. No appointments, no school, and no errands to run. After dropping Spencer off at school, we were off to Panera for a mother/daughter breakfast. Mikayla adores Panera's egg souffle, so we had one of those and an iced coffee (also a favorite). Mikayla told the manager that it was her birthday, so the manager gave her a shortbread cookie on the house.

Next, it was off to the local Toys R Us store. She received her birthday crown and balloon. She also had to spend her little birthday coupon while we were there. Hey, Mom is a pushover, so she got a couple of more birthday goodies.

We finished off the morning with a trip to her favorite playground.

Since daddy had to work 12 hours on Wednesday, we decided to have a private birthday celebration for Mikayla on Monday. It was just the five of us and grandma. Mikayla had a great time opening her presents and really savoring her gifts rather than being pressured to open the next gift. She took her time with her presents. I must say I truly enjoyed watching her enjoy her goodies without the added pressure of hostessing a party.

Grandma gave Mikayla the most adorable Dora the Explorer Mermaid doll. Dora spins on her base and her skirt transforms into a mermaid tail. Grandma also got her the Dora the Explorer Mermaid dvd to go with it. Mikayla just played and played with Dora.

Mikayla also got her first official Barbie. I know, I know all about the self image issues, but what are you gonna do? Mikayla received the Island Princess Barbie and corresponding dvd. She has enjoyed putting her Barbie into the replica white mustang convertible that is just like Mommy's mustang. She zoom zooms all over with her Barbie.

Mrs. Carrie spoiled Mikayla with her Disney Princess portable coloring easel, an Elmo Water Baby, and the most adorable little shirt. She has just had a blast coloring and putting her pictures on the fridge with big brothers' game schedules.

And, a birthday wouldn't be complete without a dress up outfit. This year, Mikayla got a Cinderella outfit. Cinderella should have been as pretty as little Kay Kay. She has not taken off the dress up shoes yet. :)

After the presents, it was time for cake. Mikayla selected her Disney princess castle cake all by herself. The cake was beautiful and was just dream-come-true perfect for our little princess.
Mikayla blew out her candle like a pro.

I can hardly believe that she will be home from China two years in November. Mikayla just seems like she has always been here. In a way she has: She has been in our hearts much longer than two years. We are blessed to have this amazing little girl in our family! We love her dearly. I know 8000 miles away there is another Mommy that is missing this little joy. I pray that God will give Mikayla's birthmother the comfort that surpasses all understanding. May she know that her daughter is safe, loved, and cherished. I will hug Mikayla a little longer and more frequently today for her birthmother and birthfather in China. I know they would love to be hugging her in person today.

May you hug yours a little longer and frequently today as well. Our children truly are the joy of today and promise of tomorrow. How blessed and honored we are to have Mikayla, Connor, & Spencer. They certainly make the sunrises and sunsets a little more breathtaking.

Quick Catch Up

Mommy is a slacker! A massive slacker! I know that I have been EXTREMELY negligent in keeping the blog up to date. I apologize. Things around the Register house has been very, very crazed these last several months. Here is a recap:

Spencer has his learner's permit and is finding out that driving isn't as easy as it looks. He has also joined the ranks of the employed. He has his first job as a bag boy at, of course, Publix. He works at the same store as Huey. He is also finding out that it takes a very long time to earn the money and no time at all to spend it. Spencer is also playing soccer in the local recreational league and starts tryout for his high school next week.

On July 1st, Connor was baptized and is a Christian! We are so happy and thrilled for my amazing son! Connor is also playing football. He is a Defensive Tackle and kick off specialist for the Junior Cougars. The Cougars are currently undefeated and playing strong. And, as some of you can relate, the Cougars practice the same days and times as Spencer's soccer team all the way across town. What I wouldn't give for a Star Trek transporter unit these days....

Mikayla is adorable and growing well. She is a precious little girl who has started her second year at preschool. Her words are coming now so quickly that it makes my head spin. She still has a great sense of humor. She has to as the boys keep her on her toes and she does the same for them. No major progress on the potty yet. Patience is the key.....

In September, I started having some discomfort in my left foot from running. Being a true, gritty runner, I ignored it and continued to run until I work up one morning and both my left foot and right knee were badly swollen and painful. It seems that I have a neuroma (an inflamed, swollen nerve ending in my foot that affects runners) and strained my LCL in my right knee. These days I am sporting the dog ugliest boot on my left foot and brace on my right knee. Needless to say, the running days are done, and I am becoming a swimmer. It is a good thing the Fashion Police have not discovered me yet.

My mom has moved from New Mexico to Ocala as of August. Things have been busy securing her home (which is a little over 5 miles from us), painting it, remodeling her kitchen, buying new appliances, buying new furniture, getting her established with doctors and everyone else, and just getting her moved over 2000 miles. She needs to be closer to family and we will get to share more family holidays with her in person.

Hence, I am juggling 3 jobs, 3 schools, 2 sports, Mom's needs, the house, the cars, etc. No wonder I am so tired. I will try not to let so long lapse between posts, but that is no guarantee.
I know all of you are just as busy. I may not have posted in a while, but that doesn't mean each of you haven't been in my daily prayers.

Molly Update

Good news! Molly is home from the hospital. So far, so good....she seems to be responding to her meds. Praise God that Molly has wonderful, diligent, conscientious parents that will look after her carefully.

Molly appears to have the mildest form of Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) which is MCD (minimal change). Time will tell if she will be in remission or not. Reoccurence is a concern and a probability. However, Lolly & Ernie know what they are dealing with and what the signs will be. MCD does not usually result in kidney transplantation, so we will continue to pray for this to be the case for little Molly.

Father in Heaven, we offer all praise and glory to you for this little girl's response. Please continue to heal her according to your will. Please grant strength, faith, steadfastness, and clarity to Ernie & Lolly as they care for this precious little angel that you led them half way around the world to adopt into their family as you have adopted each of us into yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayers for Molly

It is a parent's worst fear, the one that shakes you to your very core and the one that you fervently hope with every ounce of strength and every mustard seed of faith that you never face. The fear: Someone or something will take your child from you.

For half of us the fear is for someone and for the other half the fear is something such as disease or malignancy. Either way, the feeling of helplessness and the witness of your child suffering is a pain too deep to illuminate and too wide to bridge. For one of our dear travelmates this fear is squarely standing at their doorstep.

Molly, the precious light that shines for Lolly and Ernie, has been hospitalized since Wednesday with what has been diagnosed as Nephrotic Syndrome. This is a disease that affects the kidney in varying degrees of severity. For now, Molly is being given protein, diuretics, and steroids in the hopes of placing the disease into remission.

After the pediatricians kept assuring Lolly that everything was fine and Molly just had allergies (not likely with third spacing), Lolly decided that she would do her own research. Mom discovered that Molly's symptoms correlated to this syndrome, and upon a return visit to the pediatrician, the diagnosis has been confirmed. Don't ever let a doctor override a mom's gut intuition...you know your baby better than anyone. And so is the case here.

Please pray for this family, Molly, and the nephrologist and medical team caring for Molly. We are in a wait and see mode. If Molly responds to meds, the prognosis is good.

And for those of us who are whispering those prayers for Molly and at the same time pausing to thank our Father that we are not in those shoes, make sure to take the time to savor those little laughs, those little words of love, those little hands that hug and hold yours, and the little eyes that look to you for comfort, security, and acceptance. And...hug your babies a little longer than usual and take not one moment they are here for granted.

Lolly & Ernie: We love you more than anything! You were brought into our lives and we share a bond that only few are blessed to understand. We are but a phone call away 24/7/365. To little Molly: we offer you to our Father for healing and trust with absolute faith that He, the great physician, will heal. You are loved and adored. Mikayla blows you a kiss and so do we.

One More Sleep to Melina

Our friends, Shanna & Barry, are just one more sleep away from their precious little girl, Melina. Today (which is tomorrow there) they are enjoying the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Their "Gotcha" day is the 14th which is the 13th here, so technically, they get Melina on our Mother's Day! God is SO GOOD!

Anyway, sharing this joy with them via their blog has opened a flood gate of memories and emotions not just about our trip to Mikayla but the journey we traveled to receive each of our children.

I know that we are not a family that has been assembled in the traditional way. We certainly went through many highs and lows to be blessed to have the 3 amazing, fantastic, adorable children that we have been gifted to raise...and looking back, we wouldn't have had it any other way.

So, on this Mother's Day, I just want to give all my praise and offer all glory to God for the love he has given me and the glimpse of His love for us that I see each time I look into our children's eyes. May I never take for granted for even one second their love or His.

Happy Mother's Day.

Melina Watch

Our colleague and friend, Shanna (along with husband and two beautiful daughters), are finally ready to travel to bring home their newest blessing, Melina. She will be 10 months old on the 23rth of May and is currently residing in Guangdong. Shanna, her hubby, and youngest daughter are actually traveling to China. Their "Gotcha" Day is May 14th which is May 13th here...what an AWESOME Mother's Day gift! God is so GOOD!

We are so thrilled for our friends. This has been a long, long wait as they emailed us when we were in China in November, 2005 with their LID. At that time, the wait times for referral were about 7 months, so we are all so thrilled for Melina to finally come home. Please feel free to follow along on their journey and send your well wishes and prayers their way. The link to their blog is here under the friends section.

Mommy & Me Tea

Mikayla invited me to a very special tea at her preschool. Mikayla was not in the mood to depart from Mommy's company, so I enjoyed a private serenade from Mikayla at our seats.

It was a lovely morning. But, first, we have to catch the opening day of Spider-man 3, have a little pizza, and then head to Disney. We will spend the night and hit Animal Kingdom on Saturday. Expedition Everest is the first thing on the agenda. I know I will be going with Connor and Payton as Spencer & Huey will have nothing to do with roller coasters. No problem...Connor and I have conquered this particular roller coaster before. And yes, early means no pictures....

I got a new pair of running shoes (that I desperately needed), a PSP, 4 games to go with my new PSP, instruction manuals, an accessory package with additional memory for my PSP, a new outfit, money from my mom (thanks, Mommy!), and a new outfit from Miss Carrie and Mr. Charlie.

I am planning on spending the afternoon allowing Connor to show me all the nuances of my new PSP (as he has one) & spending the rest of the day shooing Spencer from trying to swipe my PSP (as he does not have one, yet). It should be great fun!

Oh, and age is a number...the attitude is the deciding step in anyone's age. Fortunately for me, I am the youngest in my family (in more ways than one--tee hee), so everyone is always older than me. ;)

Easter, 2007

Resurrection Sunday is a day like none other. A day to reflect on the indescribable gift Jesus lavished upon us. We drove down to Leesburg to visit the church there as our former youth minister, Hoss, has accepted a pulpit position in Leesburg. Hoss has never failed to prick our hearts with his tender presentation of God's love and word. This morning was no different.

After church, we were off to meet up with the Sloans, her awesome parents, the Reedy's and of course the Ridgeways for lunch. We all met at a seafood restaurant (I know..seafood on Easter Sunday?), but it was all about the fellowship.

We are blessed each and every day, but today, it is nice to take an extra long pause to really appreciate the gift.

Hubei Family

We are on VACATION!! These are a traditional favorite during the Harvest Festival and Chinese New Year (CNY). I am told that these cookies often have a filling inside as well, but I thought it best to crawl before I tried to run. Hence, I made just the basic cookie.

I purchased two traditional wooden molds to use on our cookies. I followed the recipe carefully and lovingly tapped out my batch of Chinese Moon Cookies (with Daddy's help). They were brushed with egg white and sprinkled with colored sugar and baked at the directed temperature and for the directed time.

Since I have never tasted the authentic product, I will assume that they have turned out correctly. They are a different type of cookie than we are use to but that really doesn't matter. All that matters is that Mikayla knows her culture is one to be honored and observed.

Oh, and by the way, the boys have discovered they taste great with some icing on the top!

Okay, so Chinese Moon Cookies with American Icing....we could be on to something!

Gators 41, OSU 14! The Ohio State romp predicted did occur, it just started 16 seconds later than everyone (else) thought--and oh yeah--Ohio State was the one taken to the woodshed for the good, ole fashioned, southern whipping.

For those of us down this way, we knew the Gators had the talent, the team, the coach, and most importantly, the heart to win the National Championship. Afterall, our basketball team (rated 37th in the country at the start of last year's season) had done the very same thing just 9 months earlier.

So, for the first time in collegiate history, the same university holds both the NCAA Basketball Championship and the National Championship in Football in the same season. That university is none other than the University of Florida, our alma mater!

Thank you to all our Gator athletes. We know the majority of you are scholar athletes, and we appreciate how you showcase our academic and athletic superiority. We are so proud of you and for you! We are proud to be part of The Gator Nation!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thefamilyregister.blogspot.com/2007/01/gators-41-osu-14-gators-win-dual.html' title='Gators 41, OSU 14! Mikayla, in particular, was dazzling in her beautiful new dress...thank you, Grandma!

New Year's Day was spent rather quietly. We just started on one of our resolutions for the year...clear out some clutter. So, Mommy & Daddy's closets and drawers look much better. Spencer & Connor's closets and drawers look better as well. After those tasks, we became couch potatoes and watched football.

We are enjoying the bowl games. However, we cannot wait until January 8th! The Gators face the Buckeyes (yucko) in the Tostitos Championship Bowl. Go Gators! He had originally wanted a Nintendo Wii, but once it was recalled, he decided to accessorize his Xbox. This year, the boys bought each of their gifts with their own money. I know they enjoyed the giving part of the holiday much more because of their efforts. I know Mommy spent much of the morning tearing up watching everyone's joy in receiving their specially chosen gifts.

We had a wonderful, wonderful holiday! How blessed we are to have one another and to be together as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. His gift was, is, and continues to be the most precious ever given. Grandma Sherouse arrived on December 15th for 13 days over Christmas. We started her visit by staying 3 days at Disney World. We enjoyed EPCOT for a day, and then Huey took our 3 wonderful kiddos to MGM the next day. Grandma and I visited the Mall at Millenia in Orlando for some Christmas shopping. We had a blast! We got to peek at how the other half lives as we window shopped at Louis Vitton, Neiman Marcus, Tiffany's, Coach, and Gucci.

I saw a little 4 carat bauble that was only 275K! Hmmm, buy a house....buy a ring......tough decision. :) I also left my fingerprints on a Prada handbag on sale for only $1500. Needless to say, we did not buy anything at these places. But, it was fun to look.

Here is what the rest of the gang was doing while we were window dreaming at the mall. It is hard to believe but Spencer & Connor are turning into such handsome young men. It was just yesterday that each of them were 2 years old. Time flies when you are having a great time! We are truly blessed to have 3 amazing, healthy, beautiful children. God has been most gracious to us!

Thanksgiving: Food, Family, & Fun!!!

Here is our favorite shot from our Thanksgiving celebration with family in Live Oak, Florida. This is big as those of you that know me well can attest. I do not usually eat Chinese. And yes, eating was a bit of a challenge last year in China. I made it and have even come to try some Chinese cuisine.

So, tonight we ventured to the Hot Wok restaurant for dinner. The waitress/hostess kept telling us how lucky Mikayla was to have come to America and have such a wonderful family. We explained that we were the ones truly blessed.

Teriyaki chicken, chicken & broccoli, and buffalo wings were the fare this evening. Spencer can definitely affirm that the hot wings at the Hot Wok were hot! Hee! Hee!

After dinner it was home for cake and ice cream...and a hot dog! Yes, Mikayla decided she wanted a hot dog when she got home even though she ate well at the restaurant. Now, exactly one year ago, we hardly can believe it has been 365 days.

We still remember everything about that day...it was overcast and drizzling but that did not dampen our joy and nervousness. The room was filled with our travel mates. These were people we had been in email contact with for months and had met in person just 4 days earlier. And in that short time in a foreign country, they were our family. We sat anxiously in the couches and signed paperwork that would allow us to have our daughters for a 24 hour harmony period. Some sat anxious and excited, while others sat silently with tears peeking at the corners of their eyes or streaming slowly down their cheeks.

I remember the inscription both in Mandarin & English across the one wall , "Thank you for all of your love pouring on the children." It struck me sadly that they were thanking us when we were the ones thanking them with every ounce of our beings. For some in our group, this was their first child: the culmination of years of dreams, heartbreaks, and now reality. For us, it was bittersweet as we knew that this would be the last child we added to our most blessed family.

I remember hoping that I would recognize Mikayla as the photos we had were 7+ months old. Then, I remember clearly them calling Qi Jia De, handing her to me, and knowing in that instance that she was the little one in the photos and the one meant to be a part of this family.

Our journey to Mikayla was a total leap of faith as we were content with our family. But, God started speaking to my heart then Huey's heart and with persistence we finally heard and understood. He made the path straight and the destination clear. We followed and found an indescribable gift at the end of the journey.

Some people have asked me since we have a biological child, a domestically adopted child, and an internationally adopted child if we feel differently about our adopted children. I can assure you that the unconditional love we feel for each of children began long before we held them (whether that was a delivery room, a living room, or a Civil Affairs room). We feel the same about each of our children: blessed!

Our first family photo. Director Chen is to the left of us in the photo. His smile at watching us united with Mikayla is one that is indelibly etched on my heart. Mikayla must have received the photo album we sent ahead with our pictures because she seemed to know our faces.

This is a shot on the bus outside the Civil Affairs Office. This shot is one of my favorites because it reminds how much our little Mikayla has given up and how graciously she has adapted to all of us and her new country.

After a very, very long nap, Mikayla played on the bed. As the theme song from Tarzan by Phil Collins says, "For one so small you seem so strong, Let my arms protect you, Keep you safe and warm, This bond between us can't be broken, I will be here...From this day on, Now and Forever More..."

And her first, real, true smile for us....she is ticklish....

Just One Year Ago...

As I reflect on the mountain of paperwork, the red tape (not the red thread), the hoops we skipped through, the wait for referral, then the 10 long weeks we waited to leave for China, I marvel that we actually made that journey that culminated in the adoption of our little lovebug, Mikayla.

Some days that seems like just yesterday, but then I pull out photos of Mikayla in China on her placement day and look at how she has changed in just 365 days and realize it has been a wonderful and fast first year. She has grown and changed so much. Her little giggle that at times escalates to a guffaw and a snort is such a joyous sound to these ears. This little girl that didn't know what to do in a high chair and never made a sound when she awoke in her crib now runs around the house playing hide and seek and definitely holds her own in the eating department. She embraces each new day with discovery and a zest which is infectious.

We have been blessed to be able to stay in contact with 9 of the 10 families we traveled to China with last year. To see their beautiful daughters change and grow and to be a part of their extended families has been a blessing and a gift that is precious and priceless. I so long in my heart to hug each of these amazing people today. I am sure I will feel this longing even more urgently on Tuesday, November 14th as this is the anniversary of when each of us met our daughters in person for the very first time.

I thought it would be neat to revisit how much little Mikayla has changed in her first year hanging out with this crazy clan that has totally been captivated by this little girl.

Halloween 2006

The Empress Mikayla chose to be the fairy princess Kay Kay this year for Halloween. Actually this ensemble was a birthday gift from her Chinese friends, Sarah and Grace. The additional bling was courtesy of another dress up outfit. The final effect was quite stunning.

Mikayla visited Daddy at his pharmacy during the store's Fall Festival bash so that he could see her all dressed up. She thought Daddy looked very realistic dressed up as a pharmacist :)

After her trip to Daddy's pharmacy, she was chauffeured in her little red wagon around the neighborhood doing her princess wave. She was the hit of the crowd and had a good time. By then she totally understood that if she smiled and looked adorable while trying to say "treat" that people gave her candy. Her favorite treat of the night was from Publix's deli. They made gloves stuffed with popcorn and used candy corn for the fingertips. Quite cute...and quite the hit with Mikayla. Spencer tried to hug Mikayla, but I think she was wise to his plan to snitch a little popcorn.

All in all, Mikayla's first Halloween was a great time. I want to thank my partner, Jack, who was gracious enough to switch schedules with me so I could share Mikayla's first Halloween with her.

Each year Huey and Connor select a pumpkin and a pattern to carve. She is doing great. She is 23 lbs 10 ozs and 33 inches tall. She is, by American standards, 25th percentile in height and around 10th percentile in weight. The main thing is she is on the growth chart (which she was not when we returned from China) and growing proportionally.

The best thing of all is that she had her final 3 immunizations! She is done until she is 5 years old! I know that Mikayla is thrilled about that! I know our pediatrician is thrilled also as Mikayla starts crying as soon as she sees him.

Now, you have to understand that Dr. Morse is a very kind, gentle, funny, intelligent physician that is accustomed to his patients actually liking him (mostly because he is a big kid himself). Dr. Morse does this noise when he palpates the abdomen that I have never heard before and cannot duplicate. But, that sound always invokes a chuckle--except from Mikayla. Even the Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck in the ears trick and the blow out the otoscope light do not get Mikayla to lighten up. As Dr. Morse says, "Mikayla, I know one of these days you and I are going to be friends."

Other than being a little behind still in language, she is on age level. The words are coming more and more each day (at least the first syllable of the words anyway). She continues to surprise us each day with new words. And, sometimes when she doesn't think about it, the whole sentence comes out clear as can be. She will get there. I remember worrying about Spencer's language development, and now, you can hardly keep up with everything he is saying!

We are very blessed to have three amazing kids! God has been so, so generous to us. It is our sincerest prayer that in everything we say and do and in everything our children say and do, God's love is evident and He is glorified.

May you be as blessed and happy...always.

Spencer is 15!

It was just yesterday that Spencer was barely the size of a football and could be carried that way. Now, he is as tall as I am and is now eligible to drive. When did all this happen? I didn't even blink....

We took off after school on October 20th for a weekend of fun and celebration at Walt Disney World. Me, Huey, Spencer, Connor, Mikayla, and Spencer's buddy, Christian, loaded up the truck and headed to Orlando. This was our first stay at our vacation club resort, Saratoga Springs, so there was that added excitement, too. The two bedroom townhouse was perfect as we could play, swim, cook, and veg out at the house. Friday night we ate (and ate, and ate) at the ESPN Sports Club on the Boardwalk. We bought Disney's meal plan which gives you a HUGE allotment of food. (BTW, unless you eat like Shaquille O'Neal, you may want to skip the meal plan as not even the 3 hungry boys could eat it all).

Saturday, we were up early and headed to the Magic Kingdom. We hit Buzz Lightyear, Space Mountain, Stitch, the Orbitors and the Tomorrowland Transit Authority all before 10:15am. Waits were light, so we made the most of it. Then, off to Mickey's Philharmagic, Goofy's Barnstormer, and the Haunted Mansion (we ended up with the short, squatty ghost and the tall, emaciated ghost following us home). Thunder Mountain Railroad was the next plan. We all loved it, but Christian definitely looked a little pale. Now, he rode Space Mountain earlier and was fine. However, Space Mountain is dark on the inside, so if he was pale then, he was disguised. Anyway, Christian said Thunder Mountain was okay, but he didn't need to go again. (Mikayla's presence allows us to do baby swap which means the boys get 2 rides for the wait of 1). And, of course, we had to check out the revamped Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Captain Barbosa & Davy Jones appear once while Jack Sparrow appears 3 times. Very cool. (And yes, we know...no flash photography).

That afternoon we crashed for a while at the resort house before heading to Downtown Disney for some shopping and food. The Earl of Sandwich is a cool place to chow. The Lego Store is really wild. It has a huge dragon in the lake made out of Legos. There are also life sized tourists made out of legos along with Bionicles and dragons.

Sunday morning the boys took a quick dip in the pool, and then we headed for home. We had to pit stop at Toys R Us as Spencer received many generous cash presents that he felt compelled to spend. A Nintendo DS Lite and some games rounded out the weekend. Sunday night, we had the annual Sherouse Chocolate Cake and candles to punctuate the celebration.

Spencer, we love you. You, Connor, & Mikayla bring joy and focus to our lives. We cherish every moment with each of you...please remember that even when we are a little blurry eyed and exhausted. Happy Birthday, Kiddo! You are awesome!

P.S. The boys received their first report cards of the year. Spencer made A/B Honor Roll and Connor made A/B Honor Roll (all As and 1 B). Wow! Looks and brains, too! We couldn't be prouder of you both!

Final Post Placement Visit

Our little Mikayla's first 11 months with us....look how she has changed.

Today, our social worker, Cynthia, came by to complete our final post placement visit (PPV) for Mikayla. This is the 12 month PPV. While we were not worried, I do have to admit that completing this visit is another milestone in our journey. It is hard to believe that this little angel has been with us for almost 12 months already.

Being able to celebrate her birthday this last week with her was such a stark contrast to this time last year when we spent the day praying that Mikayla's birthday would somehow be recognized and acknowledged. While we were not there last year, she was in our thoughts (and, of course, in our hearts). We took some comfort in knowing we would be here for all the rest of her birthdays.

As we look back over the last 11 months, she has certainly grown both physically and emotionally. She has freely given us her trust and love, and we could not be more blessed.

We look forward to watching Mikayla grow. Each new day is one of discovery and adventure for her. Each new day is a day of joy for us because she is part of our lives.

God is good...all the time....and all the time...God is good!! Even though her birthday is October 10th, we wanted to have a party for her that friends and family would be able to attend. Mikayla loves Dora the Explorer, so this was, of course, the theme. Mikaya is adorable the way she sings "Back pack, back pack." We had eleven children ranging from age 2 to age 15 present. Now, coming up with activities that kept everyone interested was a challenge, but we managed.

Mikayla totally got that this day was for her. She was so excited! She smiled, jumped, and twirled. Seeing her eyes twinkle was worth every second.

We have been so emotional these last few weeks as we remember this time last year. We were anxiously awaiting our confirmed consulate appointment so that we could leave for China. We had stared at the 3 little photos we had of her literally pixel by pixel and couldn't wait for the day when we would actually hold her in our arms. She has certainly come a long way from the little girl who had a blank stares and blank eyes but somehow knew she could trust us.

We are so very, very blessed to have this precious little girl in our lives! She hasn't been home a year yet, but it feels like she has always been here. We cannot remember our lives without her...

Happy Birthday, Missy Kay Kay! That means practices, meetings, and games.

Spencer is a referee again this year. He is only wearing the hat of official though this season. Last season, he was a player and a referee. He decided this fall he would only referee and allow himself to be free to try out for the high school junior varsity team. (I am still getting use to the idea of having a child old enough to be in high school.) He does look very "official." Connor is a having a great time. His coach is allowing him to play forward and midfield, so he is trying to make the most of his opportunities.

Gator Football Season!

Yippee! It has been 8+ months since most of us had seen one another. Our flight in was uneventful, but that was not the case with Laura & Annslee. A cancelled flight and an unexpected delay with a 21 month old was a bit trying. But, Laura as usual took it all in stride. She arrived a day later than expected on a different airline looking like it was a normal occurence. All the delays were worth it, though.

We hung out the first evening. The next morning we headed off to tour the city. We spent time in Union Station and then tackled the Navy Pier. It was hot! I thought Florida could be hot, but this was hotter! Lots and lots of sweat! The Sears Tower was our next stop. It is beautiful on the 105th floor, but there is a certain anxiety about feeling the building sway ever so slightly.

We thought we would hop on a train back to the hotel, but that turned out to be another adventure. After using the Metro in DC, the trains in Chicago were a bit disappointing. In DC if you missed a train it was no problem as another one was just minutes behind. In Chi Town, if you miss a train, it is a couple of HOURS before the next train on the weekends. But, alas, we made it back to the hotel on the last train out of downtown.

The next morning Patty & Liana had to leave and so did we. The rest of the crew (the Wares & the Maddens) headed to China Town. They said the food was great and they had a great time soaking up the culture.

We had no issues getting home, but that was not the case with the Wares. (Glad we left early...) Their flight home to Tennessee was cancelled. Flights cancelled twice in one weekend trip? That has to be a record of some kind. Anyway, after renting a car, taking on a couple of stranded fellow Tennesseeans (is that a word?), and a most unhappy Annslee, they made it home.

We are looking forward to the next time when we can get together with our extended Hubei family. The 5 year reunion is set for Disney World and the 10 year reunion is a return visit to China for the girls to reconnect with their home country.

Summer Fun

It has been hot! So, what better way to beat the heat? Yep, hit the pool. This was Mikayla's first real sojourn into the cement pond. She did great. Also, a styrofoam plane and a hover disc were bestowed on Spencer & Connor.

Uncle Bill couldn't resist teasing Mikayla. Sarah and Grace had a blast in Mikayla's room which is high praise for us. I cannot believe how quickly these girls are growing. The twins are speaking in full sentences, can spell their names, count, and say their ABCs. They are only 15 months older than Mikayla, so I better be ready to meet the challenge.

After much eating and playing, we watched fireworks on TV and outside our home. How could we not be just a few blocks away and not go? We also went through four of the Smithsonian Museums (there are 7 all together). Linda's favorite was the Natural Museum because it was displaying the Hope Diamond and other precious pieces of jewelry. (Wow!). We also toured the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, visited the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights, then we were off to the Monuments at Night tour. To stand at the base of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial and witness the statues surrounding Teddy Roosevelt's Memorial is something truly special.

We had an amazing time in Washington, DC. We would love to go back again sometime soon. If you get the chance, go and take your kids. Our Congressman and neighbor, Cliff Stearns, arranged for one of his interns to take us on a tour of the Capitol building which included the Supreme Court chambers and the actual House of Representatives floor and the Rotunda.

We got to stand on the "star" which is the exact center of Washington, DC. The artwork in the ceilings and along the walls is breathtaking. Lady Freedom is the highest status in Washington, DC (with the exception of the Washington Monument and the US Postal Tower). The exceptions are permitted because they were constructed before that ordinance went into effect.

Did you know that the Senate and House of Representatives are in different wings of the Capitol? Did you also know that the Rayford and 2 other buildings are where each congressman's office is located? Did you also know that the congressman have their own private subway system and private car so they can make it to the voting floor within 2 to 3 minutes? Did you know that we also got to ride in Congressman Stearns' private subway car? Shhh....that's a secret! :)

Thank you, Congressman Stearns for such a cool tour.

Arlington

As if the National Cathedral and Ford's Theatre were not enough to make you tear, we then ventured to Arlington National Cemetary. From the Arlington House, to JFK's eternal flame, to Bobby Kennedy's grave, to the tomb of the Unknowns, and across the Avenue of Heroes, these hallowed grounds speak of extraordinary courage and conviction. Being the child of a career military man, patriotism has been deeply instilled within me. Walking these pathways with tears streaming down my face with my husband and children at my side, I am humbled by the strength, courage, and conviction of the many men, women, and their families who epitomize all that is right with our great country. So, on this Memorial Day, I realize the words "Thank You" seem to barely scratch the surface of my gratitude. I hope they barely scratch the surface of your gratitude as well.

Touring DC

This morning we were off to tour by shuttle the city. Being from Florida, the concept of a basement is foreign to us. So, imagine the culture shock to be in a city on top of an underground city. Wow! The Metro was almost as cool as the White House. We are proud of ourselves for navigating the Metro all the way to Virginia and Mount Vernon. The view from the back porch of Mount Vernon overlooking the Potomac is breathtaking. George sure knew how to pick real estate! He and Martha are laid to rest on the grounds which speaks volumes as to how much he loved his home.

Washington, DC

The White House
The Treasury Department
An art museum on the National Mall

We couldn't wait to check out DC. Winterfest is a four day long youth rally for the Churches of Christ in the southeastern United States.

The days are filled with singing, clean comedy, and some soul reaching, weep invoking lessons about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This year was no different. Watershed Worship, an acapella singing group, performed. Watershed was at Winterfest last year and became an instant hit. They are truly an amazing group of young men. (www.watershedworship.com). Since our youth minister knows a couple of the group members, we all got to know them last year personally. So, you can probably guess that our youth group was psyched that Watershed was performing again this year. If you get a chance, check out their music and their website as they are something very special.

We were honored to be one of many chaperones that accompanied our 40+ youth to Winterfest. For the first time in eight years during Winterfest, it snowed. Connor had only seen snow once before, and we are not sure if Mikayla had ever seen snow. Many of our youth had never seen snow, so it was truly sweet watching these young men and women running around trying to catch snow in their hands and on their tongues. The snow made up for having to stand in line outside the convention center at 6am for an 8am session. Hey, when 4000+ youth are standing outside singing praises until our Lord, that too makes 6am not an issue. (The Krispy Kreme donuts and hot chocolate didn't hurt either).

Mikayla looks adorable in her fuzzy hat and fuzzy trimmed mittens. She was, of course, the hit of the trip. All the kids wanted to take turns holding her, playing with her, and making her laugh. She is still a bit reticent around others, but she traveled great and had a great time.

We are really looking forward to next year's trip! Our youth at Maricamp Road are awesome, precious young men and women. Who says kids these days don't understand what life is really all about? Hey, Hoss, sign us up again!
